A Climber's Guide to Yosemite Valley by Steve Roper (1964) (SIGNED)
A Climber's Guide to Yosemite Valley by Steve Roper (1964) (SIGNED)
The first full climbing guidebook to Yosemite Valley. This is one of the most desirable climbing collector's items: consider that it was this iconic little book (limited to less than 500 copies), which guided the Stonemasters and their friends up the vertical paradise of Yosemite.
190 pages, black-and-white with historical photos and handsome charcoal sketches. Signed and inscribed from Steve Roper to Steve Komito with a personal note dated 6 July 1964:
"To Steve Komito: for: 1) saving the California desert expedition, 1963, from financial straits 2) benevolence in permitting the doomed California diamond team to run rampant in “Frog’s Place” 3) other notable displays of compassion. Steve Roper)
Komito's nickname in Camp 4 was "The Frog", a motif which was later incorporated into the logo for his business, Komito Boots.
With dustjacket (unfortunate defect marring the word “Valley” on dj, probably caused by removing a price sticker). NOT price clipped, with original price of $5.95. A slight bend to the book, and some white staining at the top edge, front and back of the boards. Used for sure; condition probably rides the line between "Fair" and "Good". Internal pages are tight and well-bound, no issues there. Book should read fine, just not a pristine copy.
Price is high because this thing is priceless and I'll happily keep it.
Half the profits from the sale of this book will be returned to Steve Komito. Book will be shipped insured and with signature required.
