A Mountaineer's Life by Allen Steck (2017)
A Mountaineer's Life by Allen Steck (2017)
Foreword by Steve Roper.
Allen Steck was a Golden Age climber, in Yosemite and elsewhere. His name sits on one of Yosemite's most famous routes: the Steck-Salathe. Steck also frequently collaborated with Steve Roper, co-authoring the revered Fifty Classic Climbs of North America, as well as co-editing the Sierra Club's magazine Ascent, an important title in US climbing's literary canon.
This handsome hardcover book was published by Patagonia in 2017, shortly before Steck's death in 2023 at the age of 96. It features many never-before-seen pictures from Steck's personal library, as well as his perspective on a climbing life from the perspective of one who has seen more than most.
255 pages, with many full color photos throughout. I have two copies, both new.
