The dramatic story of the first American ascent of one of the world's highest peaks.

This book describes the 1978 Annapurna Women's Expedition, an unusual outing for the time: the team was comprised of 13 women, led by Arlene Blum (the author). The prevailing attitudes of the time were that women were not up to the work required to climb 8,000-meter peaks. The expedition succeeded, marking the first female ascent of Annapurna and the first by ANY American, male or female.

First published in 1980, this is the 20th anniversary edition, with a new preface and afterword by the author. Paperback, 247 pages, with small b&w photographs throughout, and an index.
