Ascent by Chris Bonington (2017)
A life spent climbing on the edge.
Old man Bonington looks back over his life.
At 422 pages, this volume is much slimmer than the man's earlier, 3-volume autobiography, but covers much of the same ground: his groundbreaking Himalayan career, where he and a generation of ambitious Brits took on Everest, Annapurna, the Eiger, via hard new routes. Many if not most of Bonington's contemporaries died along the way, but Bonington himself marched on. These were siege-style expeditions, where a large group in rotation pushed camps up the mountain and strung fixed line behind. Although a little out of style now, the climbing these guys did was undeniably cutting-edge.
UK paperback, 423 pages with two photographic inserts.
