Boundless Horizons: The Autobiography of Chris Bonington (2000)
This massive volume from the Mountaineers brings together Sir Christian Bonington's three published memoirs in one volume. Bonington was a national hero to many climbers and non-climbers in the UK, and was leader of most British expeditions to the Greater Ranges in the '70s and '80s - a time when these guys were really pushing the boundaries. Many of Bonington's friends and peers died on these expeditions - but he always made it home. Sometimes in spectacular ways.
I Chose to Climb describe's Bonington's youth, his entrance to climbing, and the early climbs in the Alps which made his name.
The Next Horizon covers the years from 1962 to 1972, where Boninton solidified his reputation as an adventurer, traveled widely as an adventure and travel correspondent for a number of papers, played an integral part in the tragic first ascent of the Eiger Direct, and led the British expedition to the South Face of Annapurna.
The Everest Years does what it says on the tin: describes Bonington's many trips to Mount Everest in the 1970s and 1980s to attempt new routes and push the limits of climbing on the world's highest peak — back when the mountain still had some fang, and the ants upon her skirts had real ambition.
Hardcover book, 687 pages with two inserts of black-and-white photographs, and one insert of color photographs. A mammoth tome, but a nice presentation if you prefer to have only one volume on your shelf instead of three.
