Climber’s Guide to the Cascade and Olympic Mountains of Washington by Fred Beckey (1949)
Climber’s Guide to the Cascade and Olympic Mountains of Washington by Fred Beckey (1949)
First edition of the famous “Beckey Bible.” This was the first-ever guidebook published describing the alpine climbing in Washington state. It was eventually updated throughout the years into the exhaustive, three-volume edition which remains in point today.
This was an iconic book for early Washington mountaineers, both this green first edition and the updated red second edition. To learn a little more of the context and importance behind this book, I'll direct you to the Old Backpacker blog, a guy who sold me one of these. He speaks with great affection of the book, saying the routes included helped develop the aspirations and dreams of the day's climbers.
Hardcover without dust jacket, handsome appearance. 271 pages, with index, selected bibliography, a good number of hand-drawn maps and fold-out map still glued into back cover. ~1 inch of water damage at bottom of first dozen or so pages containing eight photographic plates, no smell, rest of book is clean and tight.
I'll throw in a piton signed by Fred Beckey and Conrad Anker to sweeten the deal.
