Endurance by Alfred Lansing (1959) (SIGNED BY TOM HORNBEIN)
A stated First Edition hardcover of Alfred Lansing's Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage. This is a great book if you've never read it - it tells the story of Shackleton's failed Antarctic crossing, where his ship and crew became ice-locked and stranded for years. They self-rescued by journeying across the Antarctic ice, and not a single person died. Pretty wild.
Anyways this book is very popular and still in print; but this is a stylish first edition and signed and inscribed by Tom Hornbein to Steve Komito: "to my younger brother and geriatric adventurer, a treasure(?) that humbles our brief moments of deliberate adversity. So, on to the next one. With love, Tom Hornbein, Feb 14, 2002"
282 pages, text with two photographic inserts. Map of Shackleton's journey printed on inside covers. Dust jacket in vinyl cover, in nice shape with small chip missing at top of spine and general wear to edges otherwise. If you care about the distinction, I believe this is a Book-of-the-Month copy, not a true First Edition.
