In High Places by Dougal Haston (1997)
In High Places by Dougal Haston (1997)
With an introduction by Doug Scott.
This book was first published in 1972, this paperback reprint is from 1997, with a new introduction by Haston's contemporary, Doug Scott.
Dougal Haston was part of the "Boys of Everest" - a bold group of British climbers in the 1970s, most of whom died in the mountains (including Haston). Before his death in 1977, Haston climbed alongside Chris Bonington, Doug Scott, and their contemporaries who went on to put up many siege-style ascents on across the world. Some of Haston's notable climbs include the Eiger Direct with John Harlin II, Annapurna South Face with Chris Bonington, and Changbang with Bonington and Doug Scott. Haston died in 1977 after being caught in an avalanche while skiing in the Alps.
As Doug Scott writes in the introduction, this book mainly deals with Haston's climbing, and offers little insight into his personal life and psyche. As Scott wryly notes: "the fact that he married is given one sentence."
Paperback book, 168 pages, with an insert of color photos in the middle.
