Stylish purple guide to J-Tree. Has a nice feel in the hand.
Vogel describes his philosophy (and takes a few shots at other guidebook authors) in the preface:
"A picture is really worth a thousand words and with this in mind, and the realization that many foreign climbers' English skills may be limited to belay commands, climbing lingo and slang, this guide relies heavily on photographs, maps and topo route descriptions.
These new approaches to the design of the guide have been necessitated by the exponential growth in the number ofc climbs in the Monument and in order to keep this guide from a similar growth pattern. If past guides serve as exemplars of wasted space and irrelevancy, it is hoped that this guide promotes sensible restraint and intelligent economy."
401 pages, b&w. This book has made some trips to the crag, clearly, with a number of dings to the spine and folds on the covers. It will serve for many more, if you so desire.
