This book describes a British expedition into the Xinjiang province of China, one of the very first western climbing expeditions to venture into these previously restricted areas of China. (Nowadays Xinjiang is once more restricted, at the center of a human rights controversy).
The book describes a 1980 reconnaissance expedition, where the team had to learn the logistics of the area, pick a route and decide on an approach valley for the the peak. In 1981 they returned and successfully summited the 7,719-meter giant.
