Mountain Climbing Guide to the Grand Tetons by Coulter & McLane (1947)
Mountain Climbing Guide to the Grand Tetons by Coulter & McLane (1947)
Pocket-sized guide to the Teton Range, published by the Dartmouth Mountaineering Club.
Pretty advanced for a guidebook published in 1947 - but then again, the Teton Range was one of the centers of American climbing and especially guiding in these years, so there was infrastructure in place to record climbs, and guides who were very familiar with the terrain.
Includes detailed text route descriptions, although "no attempt has been made to describe every route in the range, nor to give handhold to handhold directions in the manner of European guidebooks." Numbered overview sketches show the general line of ascent. Includes index (about two thirds of a page), table of recorded ascents from 1928 to 1942, and list of all climbs registered with the National Park Service during those same years, including route and party members.
Small volume, could easily fit into a jeans pocket. Spine shows a crease but binding is sewn and still feels strong. Don't crank it open too far and it should be fine for many more years. 67 pages with small fold-out map of Teton Range at back.
