John Roskelley's account of the 1976 Indian/American expedition to climb Nanda Devi (7,816 meters). It is considered "The Tragic Expedition" because Willi Unsoeld's daughter, 22-year-old Nanda Devi Unsoeld, died on the mountain which was her namesake.
This book is considered a little controversial, as some expedition members claim that it only present's Roskelley's point-of-view on the events which unfolded, and doesn't offer an objective, grounded telling. Nonetheless, the book is considered one of the classics of the American mountaineering canon.
Hardcover book, 239 pages with one insert of black and white photographs.
