Serious Play by Steve Dieckhoff (2002)
An annotated guide to traditional Front Range classics 5.2-5.9.
This is actually a pretty cool concept for a book - it acts as a select guide to the four-star classic trad climbs on the Front Range, while also offering some instructional lessons and information for the type of intermediate climber who might be working through these routes on their path of learning. On page 53 (introduction to Eldo), Dieckhoff writes that he modeled the book on books describing elegant chess games, designed to teach beginners how the masters work.
Instead of traditional topo diagrams, Dieckhoff has made a pencil drawing for each climb, and labeled the drawing with letters. Each letter corresponds to some advice about that particular section - good gear here, stop to rest, jam through this long section... very useful for the nervy climber who wants to know what's in front of him.
