The Climber's Guide to North America: West Coast Rock Climbs by John Harlin III (1987)
The Climber's Guide to North America: West Coast Rock Climbs by John Harlin III (1987)
Second Edition.
The Climber's Guide to North America was kind of like Mountain Project, before Mountain Project existed. The idea for this series was to cover all the significant climbing areas in a geographic region, so that a traveling climber would only need the one volume to hit a lot of classic climbing. This volume covers the West Coast states of California, Oregon, Washington, Nevada, and Squamish in British Columbia.
Harlin describes the book's selection of areas and routes thus: "The climbing must be accessible by moderate hiking from a car-camping basecamp, and it must be interesting enough to make it worth either a special trip or a brief stop for climbers on their way elsewhere."
Areas covered include: Yosemite Valley, Lover's Leap, Donner Summit, the Needles (CA), Joshua Tree, Tahquitz, the Pinnacles, Red Rocks, Smith Rock, Leavenworth, Squamish, Index, and more...
The other volumes in this series are the CGNA: Rocky Mountain Rock Climbs, and the CGNA: East Coast Rock Climbs.
