The White Spider by Heinrich Harrer (1959)
The White Spider by Heinrich Harrer (1959)
First English edition of this timeless classic ( from the UK - US printing came a year later in 1960).
The White Spider is one of the great works of the mountaineering canon. It tells the history of the Eiger North Face, from the deadly early attempts, to the first successful climb by the author and three compatriots in 1938, and the few early repeats.
This version contains a handsome sketch of the face and surrounding mountains, and most importantly, an impressive three-page fold-out photograph of the entire Eiger North Face, with the route and features labeled. In later editions, this fold-out was shrunk to fit on a standard page, losing much of the impact and detail.
240 pages, with index and 40 photographs and illustrations throughout the book. I have several copies available - all in similar condition. There may be minor signs of age but overall very nice.
