True Summit by David Roberts (2000)
What Really Happened on the Legendary Ascent of Annapurna.
Annapurna by Maurice Herzog is one of the most popular mountaineering books of all time. It tells the heroic story of the first ascent of an 8,000-meter peak - the French expedition to Annapurna in 1950. But it only tells one man's point of view.
This book aims to round out the well-known story with some of the invisible perspectives. Author David Roberts used manuscripts, letters, and new books published in French to illuminate the perspectives of Louis Lachenal, Lionel Terray, and Gaston Rebuffat (all dead), and interviewed an older, mellower Herzog to put the climb in a new perspective.
Hardcover book in good condition, slight wear to dust jacket, bottom boards, and minor slant to spine. Textual notations and underlining throughout. 239 pages.
