An interesting volume, a mix between a coffee table book, an encyclopedia, a history reference, and a piece of creative writing. Pat Ament chronicles the history of free climbing (not aid climbing) in the USA from 1900-2000, describing many of the landmark climbs and the characters who achieved them. A few pages up front handle the 1800s, and a year or two of the 2000s is covered, but most time is spent on the 1900s.
