Climbing in North America by Chris Jones, Printed in 1976, first edition. It has been signed by twenty famous climbers in a one-of-a-kind monument to climbing history. Read about north American climbing history knowing those same influential people held and signed that very copy.

Signatures were gathered by Michael Chessler, of Chessler Books. His list of targets is still taped inside the front cover. Here's who you get:

Pat Ament: Boulder legend, and author of many climbing books
Hot Henry Barber: East Coast free soloist. Read more: "On Edge: The Life and Climbs of Henry Barber"
Fred Beckey: King of the dirtbags, and probably North America's most prolific first-ascentionist. Beckey made his name in the Cascades, where he wrote the guidebook which came to be known as "Beckey's Bible," but he climbed everywhere he could, well into his eighties.
Jim Bridwell: leader of the Stonemasters. Learn more about the Stonemasters in Tobin, the Stonemasters, and Me 1970-1980
Barry Corbet: namesake of Corbet's couloir, member of 1963 US Everest Expedition, and disability advocate after becoming paralyzed from the waist-down in a 1968 helicopter accident.
Bob Culp: Golden age Colorado climber, most known today for the popular Culp-Bossier route on Hallet Peak.
Glen Denny: photographer from Yosemite's Golden Age - see his photographs in Yosemite in the Sixties
Tom Frost: Yosemite legend, and early collaborator with Yvon Chouinard on climbing equipment including ice axes and hexentrics.
John Gill: Father of American bouldering, profiled in Pat Ament's excellent book Master of Rock
Lynn Hill: First person to free climb El Capitan. Her memoir: "Climbing Free".
Layton Kor: Colorado legend, many first ascents in RMNP, Eldo, Black Canyon, and Utah Desert. Participant in the Eiger Direct climb where John Harlin II lost his life. Kor's only book is a beautiful coffee-table one: Beyond the Vertical.
John Long: Stonemaster and one of the foremost climbing writers for many decades. See what we've got by John Long, here.
Jeff Lowe: Pioneering ice climber, often cited as the 'inventor' of mixed climbing with his first ascent of Octopussy in Vail, Colorado (WI6 M8).
John Middendorf: Founder of A5 Adventures, manufacturer of Big Wall gear and one of the great historians of climbing gear. Middendorf passed away unexpectedly in 2024, but his website remains online for now. When that goes down, you will only be able to access his research in his books, Mechanical Advantage Vol. 1 and Vol. 2
Gerry Roach: Author of the iconic Colorado Fourteeners guidebook, and also the 2nd person ever to complete the Seven Summits. Also owns, low key, a seriously impressive climbing resume around the world. You can about Gerry Roach's life and climbs in his book Transcendant Summits.
Royal Robbins: One of the most famous names in North American climbing. First Ascents in Yosemite, and the author of the Basic Rockcraft and Advanced Rockcraft books which taught millions of people how to climb in the 1970s and 1980s.
Doug Robinson: Author of "The Whole Natural Art of Protection", an article which appeared in the 1972 Chouinard Catalog and is largely credited with beginning the clean climbing revolution.
Steve Roper and Allen Steck: These guys go together, always. Authors of Fifty Classic Climbs in North America, as well as the editors of the influential magazine Ascent. Roper wrote the first Yosemite guidebooks
Mark Wellman: First paraplegic ascent of El Capitan, 1989
